Finishing your studies in the Netherlands as a non-EU student can be both exciting and overwhelming. Many students want to stay longer to gain work experience or start their careers here. The Orientation Year Visa (also called Zoekjaar Visa) is designed exactly for that purpose, it allows recent graduates to live and work in the Netherlands without needing a work permit for one year.
In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the Orientation Year Visa: what it is, who can apply, how to get it, FAQs, and tips to make the most of it.
What is the Orientation Year Visa?
The Orientation Year Visa (Zoekjaar) is a residence permit that lets non-EU/EEA and Swiss graduates stay in the Netherlands for up to 12 months after graduation. During this time:
-
You can work in any job without needing a work permit.
-
You can use this year to find a job, start an internship, or even launch your own business.
-
After the orientation year, if you find a job that meets the criteria for a highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant), you can switch to that residence permit.
Who Can Apply?
You can apply for the Orientation Year Visa if you meet one of these conditions:
-
You completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree at a Dutch university of applied sciences (Hogeschool) or research university.
-
You graduated from a top 200 university abroad (according to rankings such as QS, Times Higher Education, or Shanghai Ranking).
-
You conducted scientific research in the Netherlands with a valid residence permit.
Tip: You must apply within 3 years of graduating, so even if you don’t want to use the visa immediately, you still have flexibility.
